It is a very strange feeling when you are watching the new David Lynch piece. A collaboration between Lynch and John Galliano sounds very exciting. Maybe too good to be true.
The end result is a big disappointment, to stay perfectly polite with master Lynch.
The short film (15 mn) is just one cliche of Lynch’s universe after another one.
It’s not really a surprise. David Lynch tend to over copy himself from one movie to another one. Some may say, it’s the artist obsession.
An obsession means for me a progression, or at least a refinement (and it’s clearly one of the biggest strength of David Lynch movies) . In this film, it is more a gimmick.
Maybe a lack of passion.
The acting is surprisingly bad. Lynch always loved the distance in the acting and I am a big fan of that (so french?), but it’s not working here. He is one of the very few who shoot women like no one else (with HKW) but again, there is no glam around Cotillard.
The art direction (supposely John Galliano’s work) is bland. And most of all the cinematography is not at the level David Lynch used to shoot.
Unusually bad.
